What is the best place for me to stay in Los Angeles in California?

I'm not really a beach person. I'm more interested in seeing Universal Studios and the historic aspects of old school Hollywood California. I'm not necessarily interested in bumping into celebrities, but I want to visit the sites of hot celebrities. I am really having difficulty choosing a region from Los Angeles to stay because I been warned by friends that some areas of Hollywood are actually bad, and many times not what they expected. Currently I am leaning toward the Beverly Hills / West Hollywood area.

Yes, Hollywood has icky areas, and this in West Hollywood. But if you stay in a hotel nice and are aware of your surroundings, you should be fine. If you have your trip planned, so stay near the attractions you want to see, especially if you take public transportation. It is the red subway line that runs from Hollywood & Highland to Universal City station, and then we can take the shuttle bus Free street from the station at Universal Studios. Hollywood & Highland tourist area is not all sparkles and models, mostly tourists and yes, some wacky. But is Hollywood. If you want to see what is nearby, it's really nice to stay in the region for reasons of convenience. Hotel Roosevelt is nice, facing the Chinese Theater, and the interior is plush, a popular club. The Marriott Renaissance is also nice. On the side the cheapest, but fine, Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel and Hotel Castle Magic. These hotels are all close to Hollywood & Highland.
